What is GUSANO ROJO mezcal?
Gusano Rojo mezcal has been produced for three generations by a family business and is one of the most popular mezcals in Mexico. This mezcal is produced in Oaxaca (Mexico) with a traditional method and using 100% Espadín agave.
The origin of this beverage dates back more than 50 years, when Don Jacobo Lozano Páez detected the need to create a different and recognizable mezcal in the world. To do so, he used all his experience in the elaboration of liquors and the result was this Mezcal Gusano Rojo, admired and sold everywhere.
How is it taken?
Gusano Rojo is a young white mezcal made from 100% Agave Espadín. Ideal to drink on its own and chilled, in combination with citrus soft drinks or with a delicious sangria.
Why does mezcal have worms?
The name Gusano Rojo (red worm) is due to the fact that the plant that is harvested for the production of mezcal, the agave, sometimes breeds “worms” inside it. This worm is considered a delicacy with aphrodisiac properties in Oaxaca (Mexico).
According to legend, in ancient times the worm was used to control quality. If the mezcal was of the desired quality, the caterpillar was preserved. On the other hand, if the quality was lower than expected, it disintegrated. Of course, today quality control is carried out by other processes and it is no longer necessary to use the caterpillar, but it has remained a universal symbol to this day.
Tradition has it that the person who drinks the last drink from the bottle must also drink the worm inside.
However, in Spain, current legislation does not allow the sale of mezcal with the worm inside the bottle. For this reason, the mezcal GUSANO ROJO, although it keeps its original name, does not contain any worm inside.
Tasting note
- Transparent and bright color.
- Aromas of cooked maguey stalks and lightly smoked.

Hola,
